Level 1 Author Programme 

This course is suitable for writers who are serious about writing a manuscript or screenplay.  It is an intensive learning course exploring the many aspects of writing a good manuscript. This is a stand-alone course, however, it also completes level 1 of the Author Programme. To find out more about the programme check out Level 2 and Level 3.

Block 2: Characters 

  • Character Types/Roles

  • Character Development/Back Story

  • Understanding the Protagonist through Emotion, Goals & Inner Issue

 

Block 3: Dialogue  

  • Exploring Summarised and Direct Dialogue   

  • Subtext and Vernacular Speech (Dialect) 

 

Block 4: Point of View and Narrative Style 

  • Exploring First, Second, and Third Person

  • The Untrustworthy Narrator 

  • Past and Present Tense 

 

Block 5: Plot

  • Plot Structures

  • Opening and Closing 

  • Conflict and Suspense 

 

Elements of a Good Story 

  • What is a Story

  • Understanding the Protagonist and their role

  • Suspense and Conflict

  • Cause & Affect

  • Setups and Payoffs

  • Flashbacks, Subplots, and Formats 

 

Screenwriting 

  • Understanding the 3 Act Structure; Creating the Event

  • Understanding Suspense, Drama and Conflict

  • Introducing Plot Twists

  • Introducing the Protagonist and other characters

  • Understanding Screenplay formatting

 

Assessment Type:  

To be completed outside of contact teaching hours and consists of a 2,500 - 3,000 word project.
