Writing as a Business 

Level 3 Author Programme 

Leading on from Level 2, Publishing Preparation, Level 3 of the Author Programme is for anyone who plans on turning the art of writing into a business.  This course will assist in understanding the workings of a business, how to market your work, building an audience and in learning strategic planning and sales techniques. Read more on Level 1 and Level 2 of the programme.


Certification: Master Certificate 


Entry Requirements:

Completion of Level 2 (Publishing Preparation) or the candidate is already a published author.

    1. Defining your business model

    2. Understanding the writing industry, history, and trends

    3. Understanding the business functions

  3. Unit 3: How to Market 

    1. Understanding marketing – Traditional – v – Digital Marketing

    2. Marketing Fiction and Screenplays 

    3. How to create an author brand

    4. Importance of an audience network

  4. Unit 4: Understanding Finance and Cost Accounting 

    1. Understanding product costing, breakeven and return on investment 

    2. How to budget for book campaigns, tours, promotional costs and associated costs

  5. Unit 5: Strategic and Sales Planning

    1. Growth Strategies and expanding your product range

    2. Sale techniques and how to compete in the market place

    3. Using apps and online resources as business tools

    4. Developing multiple streams of income

  6. Unit 6: Author Success Stories 

    1. Who are the industry leaders – Traditional & Self Published

    2. Understanding the strategies used


Assessment Type:  

To be completed outside of contact teaching hours and consists of a 2,500 - 3,500 word assignment. 


Learning Hours: 24



On completion of the final level in the Author Programme, certification will be awarded through the Ben Kesp Writing Academy in partnership with Birchwater Education, Ireland.
