Author Programme Level 1 

Level 1 The Writing Guide 


Level 1 of the Author Programme is for anyone interested in becoming knowledgeable about, and to gain an understanding of the writing process with an aim of publishing/writing a work of fiction. This programme will assist you with understanding the different types of writing, including how to structure and plan your writing, develop a writing idea, building characters and the research involved.


Level 1 Learning Outcomes:


  1. Unit 1: Introduction to Characteristics of Writing 

    1. Types, styles and forms of writing

    2. Understanding writing genres

    3. Finding your voice

    4. Imagery in Writing

    5. Emotion in Writing 

  2. Unit 2: Writing Screenplays 

    1. Characteristics of screenwriting; Research and Planning

    2. Understanding the 3 Act Structure; Creating the Event 

    3. Understanding Suspense, Drama and Conflict 

    4. Introducing Plot Twists 

    5. Introducing the Protagonist and other Characters 

    6. Learning Screenplay Formatting 

  3. Unit 3: Novels, Short Stories & Flash Fiction 

    1. Characteristics of novels, short stories and flash fiction

    2. Elements of Story

    3. Research and Planning 

    4. Idea development, writing and plot structure

    5. Building a central character and supporting characters

    6. Developing a story scene and environment


Assessment Type: Assignment.  The assignment is completed outside of class time with a set date given for completion following the Level 1 classes. 


Assignment: (Additional Time)

2,500 - 3,000 word project.
