EXT. SCENE 1 REBEL CAMPSITE – EVENING

Malic is wrapped in BLANKETS and sleeping on the ground next to other sleeping soldiers.  His eyes move rapidly under his eyelids.  Malic is now standing in the centre of a cave, lowly illuminated.  He is without weapons and only wearing leather trousers.  A shadow appears before him.

MALIC

Who is there?  Show yourself?

The cloaked, hooded figure moves closer, removing the hood to reveal Rubella.

MALIC

Who are you?

RUBELLA

Malic, my dear boy.  Do not fear me.  I am Rubella, High Ducess of Wisdom.  I have come to you in your dream.

MALIC

Are you an angel?

RUBELLA

You may think of me as your guide, your advisor and your protector.  Along with my sister Soulep, High Ducess of War, we are gods from the people known as the Korninti.  For reasons that I cannot reveal to you for now, but our world was overrun and we fled, finding ourselves here in the Kingdom of Malaar.  We have witnessed many events during our time on this world but we are here to prepare the kingdom for what is to come.

MALIC

What can I do?  I am but a lowly rebel outlaw.

RUBELLA

You are much more than that and soon your destiny will be revealed to you. For now, I wish you to know that I am watching over you and will come to visit you again soon but when I do, do not be afraid, as I will appear to you in your waking state.

Rubella slinks into the darkness of the cave and vanishes before Malic’s eyes.  Malic opens his eyes and jumps upwards. DISTANT SHOUTS brings his attention to Barton instructing a group of men.  Malic rises and moves towards him.  The group of men disperses and Barton turns in Malic’s direction.

BARTON

Good morning sleeping beauty, you had a good sleep in.  Are you ready for our journey ahead?

Barton laughs, nudging Malic.

MALIC

I was totally out of it.  I had a really strange dream.

BARTON

Before entering battle, your mind can conjure up all sorts of things and add to that, these woods are known to harbour a few spirits of their own.

Malic glances around him and Barton smiles.

MALIC

What is the plan?

BARTON

The plan might be easier than we think.  It surprises me that our group as large as it is has been able to get so far into Metag without been spotted or stopped.  Sira really believes her father’s reign was more forceful than it was however if you do not have a good commander of your armies in place, then that is your downfall.

MALIC

Who is in charge now of the royal army?

BARTON

A general by the name of Lorenz Calis, a good man I hear but he is only able to follow instruction.  One needs their own mind, skill set and an outlook for a post such as that.  Now, get some food inside you.  We will be taking our leave from here once nightfall hits.

Malic nods and retreats to his campsite.

EXT. SCENE 2 PALACE COUNCIL CHAMBER – NIGHT

The council is in session.  Lorenz stands to the right of Sira’s seat.  Marget sits with the council members around the table.

COUNCIL MEMBER 1

My queen, at first you instruct the General who stands present here, to send out legions to put fear into the people and now you summon us all here to inform us that the palace is preparing for an onslaught! From where?

COUNCIL MEMBER 2

You can understand our surprise, my queen.  It is well known that the monarchy has no threat from within the kingdom.  Your father made sure of it.

SIRA

You are all blind to what is happening out there.  How could any of you know?  You live lives of fat cats, living off the riches provided to you.  You have grown lazy, decadent.

COUNCIL MEMBER 2

We provide counsel when it is necessary.  Your father never had any objection.

SIRA

I fear my father had grown weak and lacked interest in the end.  Something I had not noticed, nor have you or perhaps you had and you preyed on that weakness for your own selfish gains. The day will be upon us when you will have to defend this palace and city and not with your clogged and lazy minds but with weapons.  The city is now under the command of the General and all of you will follow his instruction.

Lorenz steps forward and instructs the council members to leave the chamber.

COUNCIL MEMBER 3

I must protest.

LORENZ

Your protests are noted.  Please exit the chamber and follow my guards outside.

Marget remains seated until Lorenz has left and the doors of the council chambers close.

MARGET

Do you think it is wise to upset the council members?

SIRA

My dear aunt, you know as I do the council members are of no use to us for what is coming.

MARGET

And what would I know about what is coming?

SIRA

Stop being coy with me.  You dispatched your private soldier to the Wesser border. Who was he meeting there? Barton Malor?

Marget stands.

MARGET

I will not sit here and listen to you interrogate me again.  Once was enough but not a second time.

SIRA

You are not going anywhere.  Go and check the doors if you wish. They have been locked.

Marget moves towards the main council door and is unable to open it.

MARGET

What is the meaning of this?

SIRA

It is time you and I had a talk.

Marget steps closer to the centre of the council chamber, her eyes fixed on Sira.

EXT. SCENE 3 METAG BORDER – NIGHT

Malic sits on a rock at the edge of a low ridge overlooking a lake.  The moon reflects from it.  He hears a sound in the bushes behind him and turns to see Barton exiting.  Barton sits next to Malic.

MALIC

Do you know this is the first time I actually have been away from my village?  The kingdom is certainly a beautiful place.

BARTON

It sure is.  I have travelled much of it.

MALIC

Even to Ostund Land?

BARTON

Only to its southern reaches.  No one has ever really ventured far north.  The climate does not make living conditions comfortable.

Barton turns to Malic.

BARTON

Listen Malic, there are many things I wish to say to you and yet I cannot.  My fear has always been that you were not strong enough and ready for the journey ahead and I am not talking physically.  You have proven yourself in battle and have been trained since you were strong enough to hold a sword.

MALIC

In what other way do I need to be ready?

BARTON

Life! You have seen so little of it.  You have not experienced hurt, sorrow or loss even grieved for a loved one.

MALIC

You are correct, however, if you are referring to my father, I am prepared for what fate might come to him while at the hands of Sira Galor.

BARTON

Marcus is a good man.  There are many things he wishes to tell you and I fear he will never be able to.  I know you are curious and question how Marcus and I know so much about the palace at Enegue.  How does old Garth know that story of what happened to the Siris family?  The answer.

(He pauses)

BARTON

He knows from me, and from Marcus, even Alana.

MALIC

My mother!

BARTON

I was once the general that headed up the royal palace army under King Siris.  Marcus was a highly decorated and high ranking officer of the private palace guards to the king.  Alana and Sira’s aunt, Marget Galor were ladies in waiting to the queen. Hell, they were like sisters. We were all in the inner circle of the king and queen.  But everything changed that night when Sebastian Galor assassinated the king and his wife killed the queen.  We fled, knowing our fate would be hanging.  The only one that remained was Marget as Sebastian would never hurt his own sister.

MALIC

So it was Marget that always provided the information from within?

BARTON

Yes, her private soldier, Sam who arrived earlier who brought me the note.  The note was an instruction from Marget for us to attack.  She has failed in attempting to open the eyes of Sira. Marget must be protected and I have issued word on this throughout all the camps.

MALIC

I understand but why was I never told any of this?  Why was it kept a secret from me?

BARTON

There are other secrets kept from you but for now, I am sorry, I am not at liberty to discuss such things.  It is for Marcus to tell you, not me.

Barton nudges Malic’s shoulder.

BARTON

Try and get a couple of hours sleep, we continue riding at dawn.

Barton rises and leaves Malic to gaze out over the LAKE below him.

EXT. SCENE 4 PALACE COUNCIL CHAMBERS – NIGHT

Marget paces to the end of the council chamber table and sits.

MARGET

Tell me what questions you want answering and I will attempt to answer them but let us not play a game of cat and mouse. You already accosted me in my very own living quarters.  What else do you demand of me?

SIRA

I want you to tell me that you have been a traitor to our family and to my father, your brother!

MARGET

I am no traitor!

SIRA

You are the very one, under my nose that is selling our secrets to the enemy out there! To Barton Malor! For the love of the gods, the very man who was once head of the royal palace army!  Don’t deny it.  You are a traitor to your own blood!

MARGET

I will repeat.  I am not a traitor to this family or to your father.  Have I not already showed you the truth?  You do not belong on the throne.  By blood, your father took the reins of power.  I am fixing a terrible wrong that our family committed.

SIRA

A wrong!

Marget stands and steps towards Sira.

MARGET

(Sternly)

Sira, I have advised you to listen to your heart. You know you are a fraud sitting on that throne.  Do the right thing and repent for what your father has done in killing the lives of an innocent family to justify his lustful ways for war and tyranny. Be a leader for the people that will respect you.  You do need to step down as queen. Listen to the people and earn their respect.

SIRA

To do what you say would be an act of cowardice.

MARGET

It would be an act of strength and humility, qualities of a great leader.

Sira stands and moves towards the council chamber door and bangs on it.  The door opens and Lorenz enters. Sira returns to Marget and stands before her.

SIRA

For the act of treason against the Kingdom and the ruling sovereignty, I hereby strip you of your titles, your position as a member of the royal council and you will be sentenced to prison until such time as the council and I decide your fate which most certainly will be a public hanging.

Marget smiles.

MARGET

To die now is nothing compared to what I have sacrificed over the last twenty two years. I will go in peace knowing that the right heir is on the throne.

Marget steps past Sira and moves towards Lorenz.

SIRA

Wait!  Wait! What do you mean?

Sira rushes after Marget, grabbing her by the arm.

SIRA

Answer me! Tell me what you meant by the rightful heir sitting on the throne? There is only one heir and it is me!

MARGET

You are like your mother in so many ways.  You have her beauty but you also have her vengeful and stubborn nature.  My time for talking is over my dear Sira.  I await my fate and I gladly will accept it as I have fulfilled my role.

Marget turns and walks onwards with Lorenz following her. Sira stands staring after her furiously.

Fade Out.
