Fade In.

INT. SCENE 1 ROYAL PALACE – MORNING

Sira opens her eyes. She quickly sits up and stares around her bed chamber. A knock on the door interrupts her thoughts.

SIRA

Come.

SERVANT

Sorry, my majesty.  General Lorenz is seeking an audience with you.

Sira nods.

SIRA

Very well.  I shall meet him in the council chamber shortly and I also wish to see my aunt. Have her sent for.

The servant nods and exits the chamber.  Sira gets out of bed and walks towards her window.  She is thoughtful.

INT. SCENE 2 PALACE COUNCIL CHAMBER – MORNING

Sira enters and walks past Lorenz and takes her seat at the head of the council chamber.

SIRA

Speak.

LORENZ

Your majesty.  Do I not expect an explanation as to your disappearance?  My job as head of the palace army is to ensure your safety at all times.

SIRA

I can take care of myself.  You should know of that.

LORENZ

Still, I do not know how you returned to the palace after your disappearance yesterday? But it is good that you are back safe and sound.

Sira stares at him momentarily.

SIRA

Did you get captives?

LORENZ

Yes.  We have a number of captives that will be publically hanged.  I believe one of the captives is one of the leaders of the rebel forces, a man by the name of Marcus Ward.

Sira sits in thought.

SIRA

I never even got his name.

LORENZ

Marcus Ward my majesty.

SIRA

Oh! Very well.

(Composes herself)

SIRA

See that the message gets out there.  We will make an example of these rebels. Dismissed.

Lorenz bows and departs the council chamber to pass Marget on the way in.

MARGET

You asked to see me, my niece.

SIRA

Please sit.  I was angry yesterday, perhaps it was the shock of finding out that my father kept many hidden truths from me.

Marget sits observing Sira.

MARGET

Tell me what it is you would like to know?

SIRA

Firstly I want to know about the Salic Sisters? Who are they and what do people know of them?

MARGET

Salic Sisters! Rumours my child.  No one has ever laid eyes or has claimed to have laid eyes on them.  It all stems from Ostund land. A severe place that even the mightiest warrior cannot survive so I believe it’s a story to protect many a man’s pride. That is why that region is disputed and is referred to as no-mans land.  It does not officially form part of the Kingdom of Malaar.

SIRA

So you know of no one that has encountered the sisters?

MARGET

No.  What is the interest all of a sudden in this myth?

Sira dismisses the questions with a wave of her hand.

SIRA

Answer me, why is there a shrine to a dead royal family kept in this palace that my father tried so hard in keeping their existence hidden from me?

MARGET

I do not know of your father’s reasons. The question is, now that you know the truth what are you going to do about it?

SIRA

I do not see how any of this will make any difference.  The royal bloodline has ended.  I am the only heir to the throne and I am the first generation of a new royal bloodline.

Sira stands.

SIRA

Now if you will excuse me I must attend to my duties.

Marget stands as Sira exits the chamber.

INT. SCENE 3 INTERNAL PALACE – MORNING

Sira moves swiftly along the STONE CORRIDORS and descends two flights of stone steps reaching an archway.  She enters passing through a curtain into the palace library.  CAUPER, PALACE HISTORIAN (72) man rises on her entrance.

CAUPER

My sweet queen, what a pleasure to have your company.

Sira walks to Cauper and gently kisses his cheek.

SIRA

Cauper, please forgive my absence from you of late.  It has been a few years since I spent some time with you and I am afraid now is not one of these moments but I do long for information.

CAUPER

Please sit.  What can I do for you?

SIRA

This brings back memories of when I would sit for hours listening to your history lessons of the kingdom and all the former battles and the great truce my father made between the all the great armies of the provinces.

CAUPER

You were an eager student.  You excelled in your academic studies as much as your studies in war strategy in war and combat.

Sira pauses, changing her tone.

SIRA

I understand why you lied to me and filled in the version of history to suit my father’s wishes.  Don’t look so shocked.  I know of the Siris royal family.  My aunt showed me. The man you spoke of that united all the regions to create a unitary state was King Eyre Siris.

Cauper slowly shakes his head.

CAUPER

My child it was the hardest thing I had to do and that was to lie to you as an innocent child but it became law.  The Siris family were never to be spoken of within the palace walls and do so carried a swift punishment of death.  Your father could be a cruel man.

SIRA

I am here to listen to the real history of the kingdom and especially the history concerning the Siris family. My father is dead.  There is no need to fear in mentioning that name again.

Cauper smiles giving his full attention to Sira.

INT. SCENE 4 PALACE COURTYARD – AFTERNOON

Marget walks the open ARCHED hallway. She stops and smells the air.  Glancing to her right she notices smoke rising from the internal courtyard situated between the main palace building and the palace armoury. Lifting her skirts she rushes forward and sights Lorenz overseeing a BURNING.

MARGET

Lorenz, what is happening?

LORENZ

Her Majesty is having a clear out of the castle.  She came upon some old portraits and heirlooms belonging to the Siris family.  The secret is out.  She knows the truth.

Marget looks on in horror.  She takes a step forward and stops. A soldier throws a portrait of King Siris and his wife Mayer onto the blaze.  Marget composes herself and takes leave of the courtyard.

INT. SCENE 5 PALACE BED CHAMBER – AFTERNOON

Marget rushes inside her chambers and shuts the door. Inhaling she closes her eyes.  On opening her eyes Marget sees a PORTRAIT of the king Siris resting against the foot of her bed. Marget moves towards it, staring at it.

SIRA

I thought you might like to keep one to remind you of him.

Marget turns to see Sira emerge from behind the curtains.

MARGET

What is the meaning of this?  You cannot obliterate an entire family history.

SIRA

My father already did.  My father never knew of your secret shrine.  What did you really hope to gain by showing it to me? Did you think you could persuade me to throw up my path, my vision for my Kingdom so to allow it to return the Kingdom of the old days when King Siris reigned? I had a history lesson, a real history lesson today and I was surprised to discover that my father was only second in command of the palace guards. Second to Barton Malor, the warrior that now is attempting to lead a band of rebels to the capital.  But what surprised me, even more, was to discover that you were the lady in waiting for Queen Mayer. You were the one privy to all the intimate secrets between a queen and her king.

MARGET

Enough! You know not what you speak of.

SIRA

I know enough my dear aunt.  I know that your shrine to him was a dedication to his memory and to your love for him.  It had been well known that he had a mistress, but no ordinary mistress, you even shared the bed with the king and the queen.

Marget strides towards Sira.

MARGET

Enough! I will not stand here and you have say such things.

SIRA

At first, I thought, perhaps this was an arrangement to get information for my father, to assist in the takeover of the kingdom but I am lead to believe it was more.

(Pauses)

SIRA

You were in love with him.

MARGET

Leave me and my relationship out of this.  The problem was my brother or I should say his wife.  Your mother Eve was a callous and cold woman. She was a soldier and she was suited to the battlefield.  It was her that persuaded your father to carry out the act that night killing the royal family.  I was in the very room that she stormed in and watched on as she slit the throat of the Queen with a sick smile that smeared her face.  Alana Ward and I watched on in horror, for we were powerless.

Sira moves past her.

SIRA

Alana Ward! Would she have any connection to Marcus Ward?

MARGET

Yes.  They are married. Why?

SIRA

Why now, are all the names that were in the closest circles to King Siris suddenly coming to the fore?  Barton Malaar, Marcus Ward, Alana Ward, and who knows who else I have not heard of.  You all knew each other.

MARGET

I believe you have done enough damage and said enough for one day.  Take your leave of my room.

SIRA

I am not done, my dear Aunt.  Suddenly my suspicions are increasing and I have further investigations to carry out.  From now on, you will be kept under my surveillance.

MARGET

Do you not trust me?

SIRA

At the moment, I trust no one.

Sira turns and exits the room.  Marget takes a look at the PORTRAIT before moving towards the window staring down onto the courtyard with the BURNING FLAMES dancing in the wind.

Fade Out.
